When the Downeaster route was planned in the 1990s, Freeport and Brunswick were included in the studies, but funding was only available for reaching Portland. Brunswick and Freeport would have to wait until 2010 for an expansion of service. This allowed the town of Brunswick to be able to pick up the land for the station in 1998 for eventual redevelopment into rail related uses. What eventually developed is the multi use facility of today. More details are at The Great American Stations.

Brunswick is now the north end of the line for Amtrak and has a brand new station at 19 Station Ave, Brunswick, ME 04011 (coordinates 43°54'40.2"N 69°57'55.8"W). A new maintenance facility is also in place in the area between Church Rd and Stanwood St (coordinates 43°54'39.0"N 69°59'00.7"W).
